Middle distance in Thalheim

With the decision over the middle distance the title fights for the youngsters and the seniors began. In changing conditions, it was important to find the right mix between fine orientation and foresighted planning. The participants were not only convincing in the forest.

At the beginning of the MTB-O competitions in the Erzgebirge the young starters, seniors and the participants of the open categories travelled to Thalheim to compete over the middle distance. Directly after the start in the Bürgerwald, several short connections had to be completed in a trial park. The numerous hills, valleys and posts as well as the large map scale of the separate map caused confusion among quite a few starters. Afterwards it was necessary to choose the right routes on longer connections.

In the junior categories, the European Championship titles went to Armel Berthaud (France / M17), Kaarina Nurminen (Finland / W17), Jan Hasek (Czech Republic / M20) and Nikoline Splittorff (Denmark / W20).

Since the technique failed when trying to play the national anthem, the winners picked up the microphone and showed their vocal abilities.

Ruslan Gritsan (Russia / M40), Beat Schaffner (OLG Bern, M45), Killian Lomas (Great Britain / M50), Per Gustavsson (Gothenburg Majorna OK / M55), Jens Leibiger (Post SV Dresden / M60), Heikki Saarinen (SOC Asikkala / M65), Niels Duedahl (OK Oest Birkeroed / M70), Curt Maier (ASKOE OLC Kaernten / M75) and Jack Skrydstrup (Kolding OK / M80)[won the world championships for Seniors.

In the women's race Ingrid Stengard (OK Trian / W40), Mia Eronn (Linkopings OK / W45), Helena Svensson (FK Herkules / W50), Charlie Somers Cocks (GB MTBO / W55), Tove Andersen (OK Oest Birkeroed / W60), Monika Bonafini (SLOW Bern / W65), Annelise MacLassen (Rold Skov OK / W70) as well as Ellis Byrgiel Sommer (OK Oest Birkeroed / W75)
